This is a question that you may be asking yourself if you or someone you know has been arrested or accused of any type of crime. There is only one ground of divorce, marriage breakdown, which is proven usually by one year of separation. Adultery and cruelty are also available to prove marriage breakdown, but these are rarely used and usually for tactical purposes only. Learn more.

Either party can file for divorce at any time, even before physically separating, but the decree, except in rare cases (adultery and cruelty), will have to wait until there has been a separation of at least one year. Learn more.

Parents can use the guidelines to determine how much child support should be paid. They can agree on the amount themselves or with the help of a mediator or lawyer.
